Plenty to get to on this episode, including a recap of Monday’s big announcement from the prime minister that Canada will meet its 2% NATO defence spending target this year, well ahead of what was previously pledged. Many questions, still, about how we’ll pull it off and where the money will come from.

We’ll also recap last Friday’s announcement of the Build Canada Act, and the questions that remain about the prime minister’s commitment to his own constitutional authority and whether he’ll advance pipelines or other major projects if they encounter resistance or opposition.

We’ll discuss Bill C-2, Canada’s new border security legislation, which contains provisions that would seem to go well beyond border security. We’ll hear from Dr. Michael Geist, who is a law professor and Canada Research Chair in Internet and E-Commerce Law at the University of Ottawa. He warns that these provisions mark the latest attempt in a longstanding campaign by Canadian officials to usher in so-called lawful access legislation. We’ll find out what that could mean for internet users and digital data.

A fascinating new book is challenging some of myths and narratives around vaping and instead makes the case for viewing vaping as a harm reduction tool to help smokers. Dr. Mark Tyndall is a Professor of Medicine at the School of Population and Public Health at UBC, and is the former Executive Director of the BC Center for Disease Control as well as the former Deputy Provincial Health Officer for British Columbia. His new book is called “Vaping Behind the Smoke and Fears.”

Plus, it’s municipal elections across Alberta this fall. In Calgary, Jeromy Farkas is back for a second run at mayor's chair, and what will be a rematch of four years ago. We’ll speak with Jeromy about his return to politics and his vision for the city.
