Welcome to this episode of the Rob Breakenridge Show - plenty to cover in this episode.
We start with an overview of the late-breaking news Thursday: A letter posted by U.S. President Donald Trump announcing a new 35 per cent tariff on Canadian goods, effective August 1st. There is still a July 21st deadline both sides have been working toward in order to get a deal done, so there are many questions about what this all means now going forward.
Also in this episode, a conversation with Ted Morton, professor emeritus at the University of Calgary and executive fellow at the U of C’s School of Public Policy. In his political career, Ted served as Alberta’s minister of finance and Alberta’s minister of energy. Going back even further, he was one of the authors of the now-infamous 2001 “Firewall Letter” that laid out ways Alberta could exercise more autonomy from Ottawa. We’ll get his take on the current debate around these issues, and also explore an interesting suggestion Ted has laid out with regard to the way Albertans could maximize the leverage from future referendums.
Plus, a closer look at the state of healthcare in Alberta - specifically on the front lines in emergency care. Not only are wait times in emergency rooms increasing, but the number of patients leaving ERs before they’ve been seen by a doctor is increasing, too. The head of emergency medicine at the Alberta Medical Association is sounding the alarm over what’s happening within the system and is calling on Premier Danielle Smith to join him on shift to witness all of this for herself. We’ll hear from Dr. Warren Thirsk.
