A lot of ground to cover on this episode of the podcast - two interviews for you, both on a topic that is dominating a lot of conversation in Alberta these days: Separation.
Obviously it’s separatist forces who are trying to force a referendum on the issue and convince enough Albertans to hop on their bandwagon. But it’s actually a pro-Canada group that’s beat the to the petition punch, so to speak,. Elections Alberta has approved the petition from the group Forever Canadian. They want the referendum question to be “Do you agree that Alberta should remain in Canada?”. We’ll find out more about why the group is pursuing this course as we chat with former MLA and Alberta Deputy Premier Thomas Lukaszuk - he is one of the founders of Forever Canadian.
Meanwhile, a new analysis from the Aristotle Foundation for Public Policy cautions against dismissing separatist sentiment in Alberta. We’ll have a conversation with Foundation founder and president Mark Milke about what kind of support exists for separation, what’s driving it, and why it should be taken seriously.
Plus, plenty of news to cover: Canada-US trade talks collapsing and then resuming after Canada ditched its Digital Services Tax, Alberta taking another step toward a provincial police force, and two former UCP MLAs are looking to revive the old Alberta PC Party.
